Santa Cruz/Silicon Valley New Teacher Project

Dear Teachers,

On behalf of the entire Santa Cruz/Silicon Valley New Teacher Project, we extend our deepest thanks and appreciation for your commitment to students and families during the school closures due to COVID-19. While we find ourselves navigating unprecedented times, mentors have shared the numerous ways you are collaborating with one another and developing intentional and thoughtful learning experiences for your students. Your dedication to the community is recognized and valued.

Like you, we have questions around how the school closures will impact Induction requirements. The Commission for Teacher Credentialing (CTC) will convene in late April to discuss and solidify next steps for Induction programs and active participants. Currently, the Commission staff recommends to the Commission that candidates who have been actively enrolled and fully participating in an Induction program in the 2019-2020 school year would not be asked to extend their program into the next school year.  We are hopeful that the Commission accepts this recommendation.

As an accredited credential clearing agency, the SC/SVNTP is bound to Induction standards and conditions. The Teacher Induction Precondition 3 requirement states that each Induction program must assure that each participating teacher receives an average of not less than one hour per week of individualized support/mentoring coordinated and/or provided by the mentor. Although now virtual, and as they have in the past, these weekly collaborations should focus on articulating doable actions in your Individual Learning Plans that address the ways in which you are currently learning about and developing educational experiences for your students.

We have seen first hand and heard from your mentors, the multiple ways in which you have already provided continued learning for your students and could not be more impressed and inspired by your creativity and thoughtfulness in planning.

All the evidence that you have already collected to show growth in your professional goals will be honored and we will move forward with flexibility and grace in supporting one another. Continue with the weekly collaborations with your mentor and do not hesitate to reach out to leadership with any questions and concerns.

In community,
SC/SVNTP Leadership Team
